MacGyver

Move over husband, I want Richard Dean Anderson a.k.a the famed MacGyver. After ranting about how Grey’s Anatomy comforted me during my dark days, god decided to intervene and send MacGyver to me.
I think I first knew the meaning of crush when I started watching him in action on tv aeons ago when I was a slip of a girl.
The reason I am up at 1am blogging about MacGyver is because I needed to get the excitement of watching him on tv after so many years off my system ;)
The first episode was shown hours ago and I marvelled at how much he teaches us. I had to force my uninterested 9 year old nephew to watch all the tricks he performed on the movie. It was difficult to authenticate the information shared on the show as Pebbles decided to be cranky then and shameless me I was rocking her to sleep in front of the TV (I would do anything for MacGyver). Having said that I am sure the producers of the show would have done thorough research before the show was aired.
Now let’s focus on the man himself (sigh*drool*faint) MacGyver is the epitome of every (I dare say) girl’s dream guy (Sorry, McDreamy & McSteamy) :P
He is good looking, extremely smart and he has solutions of every possible sticky situation! (Sighs again) I was busy humming the theme song the whole day and I got snapped at my hubby for being off tuned. I reckon he is jealous
Oh well, one thing for sure somebody is definitely going to sit in front of the television at 9pm from Monday-Friday.

Household Chores

Washing dishes, ironing clothes and folding them; these are a few of my favourite things to do at home. I find them therapeutic. Okay,  before you cringe in fear or disgust, please allow me to elaborate further.
As the water rinses the grime away from the dirty dishes, I feel my my shoulders relaxed and I sigh contentedly. I feel that all is good and my dishes are all squeaky clean. Something as simple as water is capable of washing away all that is dirty. And I think to myself, how nice would be it be if we can wash away all the unpleasantness (be my guest in guessing what kind) with water.
Similarly, when I iron the clothes, I like the way the creases disappear as I run the iron over the clothes. If only our worries and concerns can be ironed away so our lives could be creases free. Ironing may not be many people’s favourite chore but it is mine (provided, there is a fan nearby so I don’t sweat profusely. I ABSOLUTELY hate to sweat). As a matter of fact I love ironing. I view a badly crumpled shirt as an obstacle in life and I am capable of making it all neat and crumple-less (I know, there isn’t such word) with an iron. Basically an iron is like a strong mind. When you have a strong mind, you can face any adversities in life and come out of it triumphantly.
As for folding clothes, I don’t have an analogy except, it relaxes me. When my mind is troubled, I fold all my clothes again. Maybe in a way, I view folding clothes as compartmentalizing the things in my life. As I fold the clothes, my mind is calm and I start thinking logically (who needs exercise?!). Pebbles’ clothes however, they are a different story altogether as they are so tiny and I can’t seem to arrange them neatly in her closet. Oh well, that doesn’t mean, I want her to grow up quickly and wear older kids’ clothes. She may remain as a baby and I shall still grumble about her clothes.
So there, my fixation on household chores are as such. If only I can have the same connection with cooking.

Young Minds

My husband was a Physical Education teacher in a private school and understandably he was one of the popular teachers in school. He left to do his own business about 3 years ago but still kept in touch with the students. They even created a Watsapp group with his name as the group’s name; he’s that loved.
Anyway the kids (I call them kids because seriously, they are) have completed high school and are about to pursue their education overseas. So hubby wanted to have a small party for them at home.
We cooked dinner, okay he cooked. We have a deal. I cut, he cooks and I clean. We cleaned  the house and the kids came over. I had an image in my head where I would end up cleaning the mess after dinner, the kids would be talking uninteresting topics and I would be in bed by 11pm but lo and behold the very opposite happened.
I had so much of fun! The kids devoured the food really fast like some little piranhas. They also finished two crates of beers and two bottles of liquor. But they also cleaned up and they played with little Pebbles. She was absolutely besotted with one of them as he was quite cute looking.
We spoke about a lot of things and it was interesting to see how their young minds work. They appeared to be very confident about themselves and also knew what they want to do in the future. On a lighter note, they taught both me and my hubby how to play some interesting ‘drinking’ games.
It occurred to me, how self-absorbed we both have been since we had Pebbles. We do go out once in a while but we always spoke about Pebbles and most of the time, we would be gazing at Pebbles’ pictures on our phones. We rarely mingled with other people and I realized how much I missed adult interactions.
The dinner also reiterated the fact that I should not judge a book by its cover. Our dinner guests were fun-loving, extremely funny, talented and interesting young adults and it makes me proud that they look up to my husband.
Party ended at 4am but it was a success and I was happy. We three were.

Grey's Anatomy

This show will always have a special place in my heart simply because over 10 years ago, it served as a portal of escapism for me when I was going through a rough patch with then boyfriend.
Things were not going great for us. I was sad, confused and depressed and Grey’s Anatomy cheered me up. I rejoiced in its happiness and cried over tragic losses and sad episodes. It was my comfort blanket. Whenever we had a huge fight, I turned to Grey’s Anatomy. Whenever I needed a good cry, I turned to Grey’s Anatomy. That was how much I depended on that show.
A while later, I met my husband and life was rosy again. Eventually I stopped watching the show although I get snippets of the happenings from my sister.
Now that I am at home and once again I get to have some TV time (only at night when Pebbles is asleep or about to sleep), I watch the reruns and the familiar feelings of happiness and satisfaction surge through me. Funnily I don’t have a favourite character. I like all of them, even Yang for the matter :)
It’s interesting to know of the various ailments, how they juggle relationships, how they deal with disappointments, celebrate joy etc
I know it’s TV but so what? It makes me happy and I like that. Perhaps I should talk about Grey’s Anatomy as a bedtime story for Pebbles who at this very moment is licking her baby seat as she is hungry

Pebbles

There are times I am more than convinced that I had given birth to a teenager instead of a helpless little baby.
Pebbles is at the stage where she screams all the time for everything. Both father and daughter had screaming match the other night and both fell asleep a while later out of exhaustion. The mother in the meantime is partially deaf, thank you very much. It was pretty clear to me that Pebbles was screaming because she was clearly irritated having asked to sleep when she was not sleepy hence the screaming but hubby cleverly converted it into a game. When she screamed, he screamed louder and that prompted her to scream even louder and the frequency grew steadily higher. She made sure she had the last scream before she slept. She did not want to give in to her dad.
At 7 1/2 months of age, Pebbles had not crawled yet and the paranoid me has started to stress out. So the clever me (or so I think) devised some tricks where I get Pebbles to try to get the things she wants by placing them out of her reach. At this point, my daughter has somehow learned to careen her back as she much as she can and stretch out her cute little stubby fingers to grab hold of the things. And I thought, ‘hmm, that’s clever’.
Now Pebbles is always placed on a giant play mate so she doesn’t hurt her head if she falls backwards. The little cheeky one somehow moved out of the mat only to move it once again with her cute little stubby fingers so the object will come closer to her and only this morning she literally flipped the mat so the object rolled towards her. I swear she had a triumphant look on her face. It got me thinking if this little baby of mine is pure genius or downright lazy?!
She eats when she wants to. She sleeps when she wants to and nobody can force her to do anything against her wishes. Only last night, she stared at her dad when he very slightly reprimanded her for being a cry baby. She is only 7 months! God alone knows what  would I do when she starts rolling her eyes at me.
Please take your time to grow, Pebbles…

My Husband

I dated my husband for 6 long years before we got married. We knew each other at the university but we were only friends then. We lost touch after we graduated but bumped into each other at the train station only to rekindle our friendship which eventually grew into love. We got married in 2013 and had Pebbles in 2014.
What amazes me is that he has remained the same person he is all through these years. He is an average Joe who is highly likeable by anyone who knows him and he is such an amazing dad. He is more hands on with Pebbles than I am. Strangers who meet him feel almost at ease with him and people trust him easily
With me, he has always been selfless. He makes sure I get the food first, have enough rest and is constantly looking out for me. He does it so effortlessly and never asks anything in return.
In this day and age, it is so rare to find someone like him. Mind you, he is not imperfect. He has his flaws and weaknesses but his good side carries far more weight. He is a loving son and a doting sibling. My dad thinks the sun rises and sets on him. He is a playful and teasing brother-in-law to my sisters and have I told you what an amazing dad he is to Pebbles?Oh well,I’ll just say it again.
I married a man who doesn’t ask for much yet goes through a lot of pain to make sure his wife is happy. I admit I am not exactly an easy person to live it. I wouldn’t even marry myself! Whenever we argue, I’ll be shrieking like a banshee but he’ll just remain quiet and lets me get it out of my system. And then when everything is settled, we’ll talk it through where he will cleverly put in his points and lets me see things his way. I know, it’s sneaky but it works.
We both are the same of age but somehow he is far wiser and what I really admire about him is that he is a cool dude. He remains unfazed in the most dire circumstances and that is indeed an admirable trait.
It troubled him when I told him that I wanted to quit my job to be with Pebbles simply because money was tight (still is) but when he saw how my heart was breaking when I had to work late into the nights doing redundant work and missing out so much of time with Pebbles,he relented. I knew it was a tough decision but he let me because he loves me.
My husband’s only motivation in life is love. He is driven by love and he wants to achieve goals for love. I am indeed lucky to be married to this man and to continue learning from him.
Father’s Day is around the corner and I am so glad Pebbles has him as a dad because (again) he is simply amazing.
A toast to all the superb husbands and daddies.

Time Management

When I quit my job, I had a picture in my mind where I could allocate some hours in the day doing these:
  • Reading
  • Exercising
  • Blogging
  • Tidying up my house
  • Playing with Pebbles and making sure she understands alphabets (ok she is 7 months only but I have high hopes for my daughter)
  • Spending quality time with hubby
Well I am into 2nd week of being SAHM and have already failed in allocating time for the above tasks effectively. I need to add, failed miserably! Being a creature of routine, I find it unnerving having my routines changed every day. Some day I am up at 7am sipping a hot cup of coffee and mulling over the day’s activities and some days I am frantically trying to squeeze all the tasks in small frame of time.
Take today for an instance; It’s almost 12.15pm. I have been facing the laptop since 11am. Did a bit of work for mum, called her to tell her that I have completed it and listened to her rant about her impending assignment. She also informed me that my little niece is unwell so I called my sister, tried to sound emphatic while my mind was working over the things I wanted to write in my entry today. I am such a horrible sister! Spoke to my niece in the best syrupy voice I can muster and set down to write this. I have dishes to wash, laundry to dry and house to tidy up and this has to be done by 2.30pm. Have I told you that I haven’t showered?
For a super mum, this is such an easy feat but for a mum who walks like a sloth, who day dreams, who often doesn’t complete a task only to start another new one like me, it is a torture. Add on being sleep deprived! Pebbles has flu and hardly slept last night. I think I only slept for 2 hours cumulatively. As I gaze at my bed longingly, my mind screams to attend to the sink which is overflowing with dirty dishes. Oh dear, how in the world do you ladies do it?!!
It’s almost 12.30pm now,I am hungry but I need to tackle the household chores first.  But maybe I could eat a teeny-weeny bar of chocolate, you know for energy sake.
